Route description
Vennbahn Roundtrip
A superb and varied ride awaits you. Maybe a little tiring, but the atmosphere, the scenery and the tasting along the way are worth it! Put in a small gear to start, because immediately behind the station, a "wall" awaits you with a 10% slope! A little further you have to go around the "Fledermaus-Tunnel", which is closed to protect different species of animals that have found refuge there.
At the beginning the route winds northwards on the "Vennbahn", which has been awarded several times and which crosses 3 countries (Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany). After 33 kilometres, you leave Europe's longest cycle path on the old railway line to return along small, quiet rural roads to your starting point.
You cross a landscape of many bushes, forests and meadows to the "Huldanger Tunnel" where you reach the highest point of your hike with 552 meters above sea level. After a few more pedal turns, you come across the Belgian border sign and from now on the road descends pleasantly passing Lengeler, Dürler, Oudler to Burg-Reuland.
From Steffeshausen the road rises gently, like most old railway lines, with an average gradient of 2% through the scenic Our Valley.
Between Auel and Hemmeres, along the German-Belgian border, the path constantly jumps from one country to another. In Lommersweiler you enjoy the freshness of a small tunnel. When you spot an imposing motorway viaduct, you know St. Vith isn't far away.
St. Vith is located in the south-east of the province of Liège, at the intersection of the Eifel and the Ardennes. Enjoy a break in the city centre. Leaving town, you continue on to Neundorf and Crombach, the jagged road of saw goes up and down endlessly through rural landscapes, passing Maldingen, Aldringen and Ourthe. You arrive in Gouvy, from where you can comfortably return by train to Luxembourg or continue your journey along small paths to the Luxembourg border.
You cross the famous cycle path, "Ravel L163" which goes west from here to Bastogne. The final kilometres back to Troisvierges via Hautbellain, Basbellain and Biwisch are demanding but hauntingly beautiful, with panoramic scenery.
